Trillium Grant

Food Hub for Perth Gets Cooking with $140,000 Boost

MPP Hillier announces new OTF Grant

Perth – Local MPP Randy Hillier served up some great news to members of the Perth and District Food Bank and Friendship Centre today, as he announced news of a $140,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for a food hub. MPP Hillier was joined by OTF representative Bruce Duncan in congratulating the Perth and District Food Bank and presented the group with a plaque from the Foundation.

Hillier was quick to acknowledge the growing financial pressures families face, and the assistance this organization continues to provide.  “With an ever-rising cost of living in Ontario, more and more families are forced to call upon their communities for assistance. The Perth and District Food Bank has answered that call in the past, and this grant will help them continue to provide these services to the community.”

Over the next year, the OTF grant will help to relocate the food bank to a new location, which will be retrofitted with a fully functioning kitchen for cooking and promote learning opportunities. The Perth and District Food Bank and Friendship Centre will be a food hub, providing local community members with opportunities for learning, growing and preserving food. The Food Bank serves an average of 160 families each month, of which 40% are children. In addition, the food bank will be made accessible and barrier free so that all community members can participate in programs offered at the centre.

“We are grateful to be the recipient of the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant,” said Ted Miller, Chair, Perth and District Food Bank and Friendship Centre. “As we move into our new home it will enable us to introduce new programmes and services for the benefit of our residents. Without this grant these initiatives would not be possible.”

The Perth and District Food Bank was established in the fall of 1997 with a mission to provide emergency food assistance to the residents of Perth and the surrounding Townships of Drummond/N. Elmsley, Tay Valley and some residents of Lanark Highlands bordering on the other two townships. The Food Bank is also the drop off depot for food received from the Ontario Association of Food Bank’s reclamation program. This food is sorted and then redistributed to other food banks in Lanark County, namely, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, and Lanark Village. For more information on programs and new opportunities, please visit http://perthfoodbank.com.

A leading grantmaker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF builds healthy and vibrant communities. www.trilliumfoundation.org

Looking for your support

The Perth and District Food Bank is currently in need of plastic grocery bags and reusable grocery bags.

We recently introduced a Bring Your Own Bag program and more and more clients are bringing in their bags but we still need bags for clients who forget or don’t have any of their own.

If you have any plastic or reusable bags that you can spare please drop them of at the Food Bank or at the food bank bins at our local grocery stores.

Thank you so much for your support!
